I haven’t been in jiujitsu long enough to experience this (its still new!andexciting!), but I’ve had that problem periodically with karate. While once or twice I had serious life-events that were funkifying me, sometimes I had no idea what the problem was.

A few years ago, I had a period of months where I couldn’t be arsed. I’d sometimes go to class, sometimes not, and when I went, I felt off and slow and like I didn’t want to be there. At one point, I took a month or two off and wondered if I’d ever get back into it. I WANTED to want to be there. I just didn’t have the motivation or love for it.

After awhile… the itch came back. All I wanted was to go back. I think I just got enough distance to remember why I loved it. I started going regularly again, found things that sparked my interest, and got my drive back. But that funk? It sucked.

I think part of it was that I was burned out. I’d been doing All Karate All The Time, and I was also at a point in my training where I felt like I was stagnant – not getting any better, not working on anything new – all that energy and output feeling like it was being wasted. The combination left an exhausted and unmotivated Sarah.

I’m sure it’ll turn around – probably much faster than my funk did! – but in the meantime, don’t beat yourself up about it. From experience? That makes you even less motivated.

A friend of mine who had some time off training and was losing interest found that a private lesson with a really good instructor reignited the spark. So, you could try that: the instructor in question was Henry Akins, but I’m sure there is somebody equally high level closer to you than Santa Monica. 🙂

What works for me is focusing on technique and analysing the crap out of it, but then I’m a huge geek. ;D

Usually for me watching some youtube videos gets me right back to wanting to train again 🙂 Watch some highlights and you’ll too want to get in there and do those crazy sweeps, sick passes and throws 🙂
